While the young Disney actress and singer has been active on tour with the Jonas Brothers and appeared happy in public appearances, a rep confirmed to People.com that Lovato has been dealing with "emotional and physical issues...for some time."
It seems as though the "issues" may be due to bullying that Lovato was victim to as early as middle school, TMZ.com reported.
Back in 2008, she told Ellen DeGeneres she was bullied so much in 7th grade that she quit going to her middle school entirely and switched to home schooling.
Although Lovato said she wasn't sure why she was targeted by bullies, she recognized that it may have been a result of her acting career. Either way, she told DeGeneres, "I pinned it on myself."
Now that Lovato is seeking professional help, her father, Patrick, is speaking out, telling RadarOnline.com he believes her acting career has affected her well-being.
He says the stresses of Hollywood are partially to blame for his famous daughter's issues, which reportedly include cutting, an eating disorder and struggles with body image.
"There are a lot of pressures," he told Radar. "That is one of the things I worried about when she signed with Disney."
Patrick, who reportedly split with the starlet's mom in 1994, said he had no idea his daughter decided to attend a treatment center when the news broke, though he did clarify that the location she went to was "not a drug addiction center."
"She'll be fine. She's strong alright," he said.
Disney also voiced support for its child star.
"We support Demi's decision to put her health first and we send her our best wishes," a Disney rep told People.
Lovato's show, "Sonny with a Chance," has been on a scheduled hiatus.
Despite Lovato leaving the Jonas Brothers tour, the show must go on - even without her.
According to TMZ, a source connected with the tour said "there are no plans to replace Demi for the remaining six days on the Jonas Brothers Live in Concert tour."
